Opportunity Gone Through My Fingers

So last week I was browsing through one of my favorite Nerd sites, Kotaku and looking through I noticed that they were recruiting Interns/apprentices. I was kinda sad and I'll explain why. Journalism has always been a sort of, secret love of mine. I love reading reviews and investigating movie, game and music previews, so when the opportunity popped up to apply, I cried inside. I only have one or 2 reviews or news related articles in my blog. That doesn't make for a good portfolio.

After that I was looking through my blog to see what I had, if anything. I found two reviews and some poetry, not bad right? Well considering that is a 2(ish) year portfolio, yes. I also looked at my New Years resolution, and I noticed that I had "Write one piece of Creative Writing a Week". This sparked an idea (and a realization of laziness). I should use that to my advantage.

Well, Im going to try to write articles based on movies, music and games, at least once a week. something small, an opinion or even reviews. I need to build up a portfolio. Anyways, I need to get on that ASAP and build a respectable portfolio as well as starting to post stuff on websites to get my name out there.

Daily Sketches - 2

So this is week two... and I slacked, and I mean A LOT!! In fact, I'm not gonna lie, I didn't draw 3 days, the 16th, 17th nor the 18th. I'm a disgrace. Well, it's not the end of the world, anyways, lets get started, no?

1.13.10
So, I drew my pal Stephen one day while he was sitting down. not bad, but not the greatest. I slacked a bit and drew it quite fast, the feature I'm least proud of is his face, since it hardly looks like him.

1.14.10
Oh gosh, I love this one. It would be a bit of a cop out if it hadn't been for the fact that it gave me a hard time. Drawing the hands on the ghost and Pac's expression. I'm actually quite proud of it.

1.15.10
Another failed cyber-crap-thing drawing. I suck at drawing women, and this is no exception. The legs are horrible and have no excuse, but apart from that, I'm actually quite proud of the rest of the drawing... not proud actually, just less ashamed of it.

1.19.10 (1 of 2)
This is a dude I drew in Gorillaz inspired fashion. I'm quite proud of it and think I may have found the style to emulate to draw practice from. The hands and legs are quite fantastic and the proportions are pretty dang good. I won't hide it, I LOVE this drawing.

1.19.10 (2 of 2)
I tried to draw a douche looking guy. Did I fail? I think so, but maybe not.

1.20.10
This was another attempt to draw a woman. I'm actually a little more proud of this one. The proportions seem off, but that's mostly because of the clothing style on her. I should have drawn more detail on her torso, but I was feeling like a pervert just drawing her butt. Overall, still good. Still using the my "Gorillaz" drawing technique (which is working like magic) and I'm still trying to figure out her hair style, does anyone understand it, I just drew what kind of made sense.

So, another week with another 3 days of slackage, I need to stop that, or draw two pictures to make up for the missing days. Well, I don't know if you can tell, but I looked at my Figure Drawing notes on the 18th, that's when my drawings stopped sucking so much, now they're decent enough to polish digitally.

Daily Sketches - 1

So I don't know how many of you follow my friend Stephen's blog. Well he and I decided to do some daily sketches as a new years resolution. I've been following it pretty well, with the exception of missing some days, but it's been consistent. Anyways, here's some, starting from day one (January 4th, I started late, sue me) until.... the 11th. that's a week right? I think so.

1.4.10
So this is the first sketch I did, and I did it in the ever loveable blue pencil. I tried to stray away from a Link design, but failed. I set out to draw and original elf... I ended up with an elf (named Link). Oh well, 1 out of 2 isn't too bad.

1.5.10
This one was a bit of a cop out... and I don't blame myself. It's a little joker and batman in a cutesy cartoon style. I don't like to draw much detail to the joker unless I'm using color pencils... and he's such a color intensive character that you can't really tell who he is without it.

1.6.10 (1 of 3)
This was a sorry attempt to do an action pose and to show motion. I kinda failed. The design of the character, the placement of anything on it... after this I decided to go back to studying my Figure Drawing notes.

1.6.10 (2 of 3)
I'm actually proud of this one. I drew a solid character and his personality kinda shows too. He's an angel and that's a little fire within his halo. I suck at drawing eyes in 3/4 view because the farther one always looks like a lazy eye, no exception here.

1.6.10 (3 of 3)
I'm actually quite proud of this portrait/Head study. Its obviously not serious nor did I use a model for it, but most measurements are right and I could see this as a TV show character, maybe a bad guy. That's when I'm most proud, when I see something mine and think "if someone else drew this, it would be famous".

1.7.10 - 1.9.10
some where in this time period I drew an awesome Tribal Spider design that I lost.

1.10.10
So in honor of the binary day of the year (011010) I tried to draw cyberpunk... and I think I failed considerably, specially considering I'd never even seen Cyber Punk before, but whatever. Its supposed to be like a futuristic electro-samurai. sigh.

1.11.10
This time around I decided to interpret a character I like in my own fashion. I tried to draw Sweeny Todd, but I don't think it came through too well, in all honesty, it looks like Beethoven with a broken samurai sword... which doesn't sound like a bad idea for an anime about fighting composers... now I need to make a Ninja Mozart.

That was pretty much my first week of daily sketches and not a bad start if I do say so myself. The next week gets better and a lot cooler. My next Daily Sketch update will cover 1-12 through 1-19 (or 1-20 since I started a day late), so look forward to that.

New Years Resolution: 2010

So, thinking about the new year, I thought that I might as well make a resolution, you know with my "renaissance" I'm pretty much a word away from it being a resolution, so I thought "might as well".

So here's the stuff from my Renaissance:

+ Work Out - I wanted to be more fit, thinner and more active.

+ Guitar - Actually learn to play it and hopefully move to Bass later.

+ Vocal Lessons - So I can sing and maybe carry a beat or rhythm.

+ Better Job - Get one where I work less and get paid more.

Here's some New Year's Resolution from recently (some just expand on the previous)

+ Draw one complete sketch each day.

+ Practice Guitar for 30 minutes 5 out of 7 days a week

+ Write once a week; song, story, poetry, anything that requires creative thinking.

+ Learn one song a month on Guitar.

So as you can see it's all pretty simple, and really, I'm giving myself 4 months to do all this. I have from January 4th until May 1st. I decided not to give myself the whole year, that much time begs for procrastination, but four months is a short/long enough time that I can pace myself well while staying strict.

I'm also keeping a journal on anything I do that involves:

Improv
Fitness
Guitar
Vocal Lessons
Job Hunting
Writing

So Yep, Happy New Years all.
